Review: Lush Brazened Honey Fresh Face Mask

Recently my skin has been feeling rather...blah...I guess would be the word.  I don't know if it's because it's actually cold now, or if I'm not sleeping enough of something, but I felt like it needed a boost.

I should start off by saying I'm very new to the world of masks.  Normally I'm leery of trying new skin products, as I'm afraid of having a bad reaction.  However, none of my regular skin care products seemed to be working anymore, so I figured I had nothing to lose.  Many people in the blogging and YouTube community rave about Lush, so I thought I'd give them a try.  This was my first experience using Lush face products (I've tried the bath products before) and I was pleasantly surprised.

After looking through all the Fresh Faced Masks I settled on Brazened Honey.
Here is what Lush Has to say about it:

"Balance is beautiful:
Brazened Honey was inspired by traditional Indian ayurvedic principles, which put emphasis on balance as the foundation to health. Our deepest cleansing mask, Helen combined fresh free range eggs and honey to soften, with astringent lime oil, antiseptic rosemary and exfoliating ground almonds.

For a seriously clean face:
Kaolin reaches deep down into pores to pull out dirt and impurities, leaving your skin noticeably brighter and fresher. Brazened Honey is very stimulating, so if you're quite sensitive, we recommend navigating towards Catastrophe Cosmetic or Oatifix instead!" (sourced from www.lush.ca)

The girl at the store said to use it once or twice a week and leave it on for about 10 minutes.
I followed these directions, and for the most part I did enjoy using it.

Pros:
-Decent price point $6.95 CND
-Refreshing to the skin, since this a fresh mask, you must store it in the fridge.  I enjoyed the cool feeling once applied.
-Light scent, I couldn't quite put my finger on what this smelled like, it wasn't honey, but it wasn't unpleasant.
-Crushed almonds in the mask gently exfoliate the skin as you wash it off.
-It made my skin feel very smooth and refreshed.  I guess you would call it "brighter" as they claim.

Cons:
-Since this is a fresh mask, it only has a life of 3 weeks.  That may seem like a long time, but even after using the product twice a week for 3 weeks, I still had quite a lot left in the pot.  Probably 1-2 more uses.  However since it was expired, I had to dispose of it.
-The downside of having to keep it in the fridge, if it had gotten pushed to back of the fridge, I probably would have totally forgotten about it.  Product could also be mistaken for guacamole if one did not take notice of the label!
-You need to be careful how long you leave it on for.  Lush online says to not let it completely dry.  I did leave it on a bit passed the 10 minute mark once, and it proved much more difficult to rinse off.  I did have to rinse my face several times to remove all traces of the mask.
-Fresh Face Masks are only available in Lush stores, not online.  This isn't so much a con for me, since there are several Lush locations that are easily accessible, but for others, it may be more of a journey.

So in the end, would I buy this product again?
Probably yes.  I think I would try a different formula of mask the next time.  More out of curiosity of trying another new product!  I would recommend to try and find one with the latest expiry date when purchasing.
Also, if you're unsure which mask is right for you, ask if you can have one use sample.  Most Lush locations I've seen have these masks sitting in bowls on ice, ready to spoon out.

Let me know if you've tried any Lush masks, and which one is your favourite.

Cheers!
Sarah

  1. I love Lush! I mainly use their bath products though and have never tried any of their fresh face masks. If you return 5 empty Lush pots you get a free fresh face mask so I may do that.

  2. I've kept my pot to return, but now it's just taking up space until I have more! I think I will be trying the Cupcake mask next :)

  3. I haven't tried any Lush products before. This seems like a really neat idea though. :)

  4. The mask sounds great, but I think the short lifetime might bug me, even for the price. It might seem cheap, but adds up when you think about how often you have to replenish.

  5. You can still use it after it expires as a hand or foot mask. Just don't use the masks on more sensitive areas like your face or neck.
